Family Literacy Night: Joyfully Celebrating Reading In Our Community
Help me give my students the resources to celebrate and put on a marvelous service project delivering a school wide Literacy Night for our community of learners and families.
This project is not currently eligible for funding.
Our students would like to have our first annual Family Literacy Night in April. The goal of this special evening of reading is to promote family literacy, and build a community of students who love to read, while being led by students starting as early as Kindergarten.
Readers are made on the laps of their parents however, the students in our community don't always have access to current and diverse literature.
We are a Title 1 school and students come from very diverse backgrounds, both culturally and economically. We hope to continue to engage our families in literacy by providing titles that spark excitement in our children. Teachers will be responsible for putting together information packets, and students will lead various book centers that focus on literacy. Family Literacy Night is to provide important information about children’s literacy development and share research-based strategies that can be easily be implemented by parents at home with ANY text. Students will provide student led centers that will be centered around a camping theme for our first Literacy Family Night. Some of the student led Pre-K through 5th grade literacy stations will include: flashlight reading, literacy games, retelling/comprehension, rhyming, read to a stuffy, readers theater, fishing for letters, and fluency activities for each grade level. Our students are very excited to put on their “teacher hats” and run centers for one evening in April.
