I work with low-income students in grades K-4 who are eager to learn and have fun. They especially enjoy learning with hands-on activities. Games are a favorite. We have been working on family engagement as a schoolwide goal. What a perfect way to reach that goal, by playing games as a family! Our students need additional support outside of school to practice their reading skills, critical thinking, teamwork, using background knowledge, and problem-solving. All these skills can be taught/practiced by playing games.
Providing these games will give families the opportunities to play a variety of games throughout the school year. Students will be able to check out a game to take home, play at their leisure, and return for a chance to win their own game to keep. When they return their checked-out game, they can take another home.
Each of these games will provide a range of skills that are important to the development of children.
They will practice conflict resolution, taking turns, strategies, and logic along with using appropriate models and tools. They are learning with play! Imagine the possibilities!
