This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A great story can change a life. When we give stories to students, we are providing them with the context through which they can start to understand their place in the world, as separate from the traditionally-defining factors of parents, family, friends, and the media. Many of my students come from a world where they don't have people to read to them at home. Whether they have after school jobs, their parents work multiple jobs, or no one at home speaks English, these kids don't have a love of reading built into their realities. Some of them have dealt with more in their 14 or 15 years than many adults have conquered in 30 or 40. But their challenges are most certainly not what define them. They are able and creative and hungry for knowledge.

They are captivated when their teachers give them the chance to really achieve the levels of insight that others never expected them to reach.

My students are confused in a world where too much marketing and advertising has left them lost. What should they want? Who should they be? It is rewarding to offer them the platform to be able to figure out these answers.

My Project

My students need nonfiction and fiction texts to support their independent reading. These students only need that one experience with a good book to change their perspective forever! It never fails. They walk into their 9th grade English class, and they become afraid when I tell them we will be choosing and reading books independently. They need to pick books that no one is making them read. With this library of options, many of my students will break through this fear and have the first rewarding reading experience of their lives. They can discover in these fiction and nonfiction titles the same excitement usually reserved for TV, movies, and video games.

We are teaching them more than grammar and vocabulary; we are teaching them how to use their imagination and fall in love with a story.

This will change them forever. These students have everything in them to become the future leaders of this country and this world, but they need our help to get there. I believe becoming a life-long reader is vital in ensuring the cognitive and social success of my students. We must dispel this myth of dusty old books full of foreign facts and figures and place into their hands the seeds that will germinate into a true love of literature.
