Help me give my students an opportunity to learn about the great artist, Faith Ringgold, with books and fabric resources to create quilt squares like her.
For Black history month, my students will learn about the great African American artist Faith Ringgold. She was born in 1930 in Harlem, New York, and is a painter, mixed media sculptor, performance artist, writer, teacher and lecture.
My students will read several books about her life, and discover how she used fabric and paint to create beautiful quilts that tell important stories of the past and present.
She will be my students inspiration for their quilt project, using lovely cotton and silk squares, paints and sequins.
Faith Ringgold fought to be seen and heard and for representation of Black artists and women artists in New York City museums, all the while following her own creative path. Her activism has opened doors for many, including the artist herself. I know my students will learn so much from her artistic journey and the important impact she made to the world, as an artistic and activist.
