Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine never knowing about The Gingerbread Man, Little Red Riding Hood or Chicken Little! Today, in my school, the only understanding of these classics is through movies like Shrek. These are stories that traditionally were taught at home but now are falling through the cracks.

Currently we have over 880 students that in the poverty level.

Last year, when I became the school librarian, I realized that only a handful of the Kindergrtners knew how to retell the story of the Three Little Pigs. I was shocked. Unfortunately, our library does not have many of the traditional Fairy Tales and Folk Tales that we grew up with. Most of this genre is labeled at a 4th/5th grade reading level.

My Project

Your donation would make a huge difference in not only the primary students but also in the older students. I love to read-aloud during our library time. The books that I choose are for a very specific reason. By helping fund this project, you will open up a hole new genre that is slowly slippy through the cracks.

Folk tales and fairy tales are at the heart of our childhood memories.

Putting these types of books into the hands of our students will help develop confident readers. The predictability and characterization will help the students connect to more challenging books in the future. The retelling will also help build oral language which will ultimately improve their writing (organization and details). Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
