My students need choices! Each student needs to be able to find the seat, board, light or space that best allows him or her to successfully complete work, investigate, and grow as a learner.
I share 40 students with a partner teacher. Our eight and nine year olds have a variety of gifts and needs. We are lucky to get to learn with and from some of the most amazing children you might ever get to meet. Our school has a culturally diverse population. Students come from families where Spanish, Arabic, French, Vietnamese are spoken. I love the conversations and questions that such diversity sparks in our classrooms. Some students also live with ADD, ADHD and dyslexia. This brings an active and creative component to our classroom culture.
My Project
Flexible seating is a concept that allows student choice in seating and work space. Students try out and find ou, which style of seating works best for him or her to be able to focus on assignments and investigation in the classroom. Much like we have our favorite work spaces at home or our favorite cafe, students need to have options to find the best work space in the classroom. Since we are not all same, our seating and work space options in the classroom cannot be the same. Flexible seating allows students to have choice and control over their learning environment.
