Fahrenheit 451 - Bradbury's Predictions Come True

My students need 45 copies of "Fahrenheit 451" to enhance our integrated unit on mental health.

My Students

I have taught Fahrenheit 451 in my Advanced English 10 classes for eight years. This year I would like to teach it in my CP English 10 classes, too. Unfortunately, we do not have enough copies; I need forty-five copies so each student has one.

My school is a pathway school in the Antioch Unified School District that opened in August 2008, and serves about 650 students in grades 9 through 12.

Our four-year program uniquely prepares students for all areas of health related careers and has a strong emphasis on math and science. Students are required to take four years of math, four years of lab science, four years of health science, and two years of a foreign language. All students who successfully complete the program meet or exceed the University of California A-G requirements. The health science theme is integrated throughout all curricular areas with heavy emphasis on integrated project based units for every grade level.

My Project

One of the integrated units in 10th grade focuses on mental health. Our mental health unit explores the connection between the overuse of technology and depression, stress, and fatigue in teens. In "Fahrenheit 451" Bradbury tackles the subject of reliance on mass media, and the negative impact it has on society. In one activity students find three present-day articles that relate to depression, stress, and fatigue in teens and research the role technology plays in these conditions. Students also explain the connection between the articles and "Fahrenheit 451".

I have a limited number of copies of "Fahrenheit 451".

I have 140 students in my CP classes, and I only have 95 copies of the novel. This year one of my students gave up technology for Lent because she wanted to make real connections with her friends and family that did not involve a text, a Snapchat, or an Instagram photo. I want ALL of my students to experience reading Bradbury's enlightening novel about the negative impact the overuse of technology has on our lives.
