The students at my school come from a variety of backgrounds. Roughly 49% of our students come from a Hispanic background and 60% of our total school population is in a position to receive free and reduced services for lunch. Our students come to school from a diverse variety of backgrounds ranging from two-parent families, single-parent families, broken families, and migrant families.
My students come in every day with a smile on their face and ready to learn.
But sometimes learning can be difficult for them depending on what their family structure is like, whether they were able to have dinner the night before, or breakfast that morning.
I enjoy getting to know and build relationships with my students. Gaining their trust and respect is important for them to learn. If they don't believe that I have their best interests at heart then I can't expect them to buy into what I want them to do. Therefore I work very hard to create a safe environment for them to be successful.
My Project
I teach fifth grade and am saddened when students come to me without the knowledge of their basic math facts. This causes them to struggle more during instruction and independent work time in math because most of their brain activity is focused on calculating a math fact rather than digging into and understanding what concept or strategy I am trying to teach.
I also run an after school math facts club for some of my students as well as students from my two colleagues classes.
I want to give them extra practice to increase their fluency and confidence. I have playing cards and some games I printed off the internet but in order to keep my students engaged I need to find creative ways for them to learn their facts without making it seem like work. The games I have chosen will allow them to learn and have fun at the same time.
