My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the globe. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences and culture to our school. We are a Title I school in a low-income community, and I have twenty-eight students in my class. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day.
I grew up in this city, and I truly believe I am meant to teach here and give back all I can to my hometown.
My school is a magical place. Despite the challenging home lives of many, my students walk in the door of our quaint little building and are welcomed with heartfelt greetings and genuine smiles, and they are ready to be the best they can be.
Our staff provides specific academic, emotional, and behavioral support to students to meet their specific needs so they can reach their personal potential. I am blessed to witness incredible student growth during each school year, a result of the dedication of my colleagues and hard work of our students.
My Project
Have you ever heard of a rekenrek? I recently attended a training and learned all about what a powerful tool they are for teaching young students number sense! Addition and subtraction, breaking apart numbers, and place value are just a few skills that can be taught using this unique tool.
Research tells us that students do not learn their facts by memorizing them - they learn by playing with numbers and developing strategies!
Playing games with numbers helps build understanding and students then use these understandings to find easy, effective, efficient strategies in mathematics.
Our K-2 teachers will focus on the addition and subtraction games and our older students will enjoy the multiplication and division games. Thank you for your support!
