My students need a half-class set of "Chew on This" (the kid friendly version of Fast Food Nation) so we can study nonfiction writing and the realities of a healthy diet.
Students today are exposed to two sad realities: First, they are not reading enough "non-fiction for pleasure" books; studies have shown this hurts their ability to read the informational textbooks most of their learning comes from. Second, the omnipresence of fast food and unhealthy diets.
I teach at an urban school with a great mix of student diversity.
I have students from multiple religious, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. We blend together to create a classroom that doesn't just celebrate diversity, it lives it. I have a great group of kids who bring energy, creativity, and excitement to everything they do. Like all middle school students, they care about two things: one, "is it fair?" and two, "is it about me?" Many of my students are unaware of the negative impact fast food and its advertising have on their future. They often write and talk about eating at McDonald's, Taco Bell, Jack-In-The-Box, etc. The desktop of our classroom computer usually has a student created ad for one of these establishments. It is sad to know that not only is an unhealthy diet part of their lives, but they don't even know how harmful it is.
Next year, I hope to teach "Chew On This" as a whole-class text. The district does not have money to buy texts outside of the approved/recommended reading list. This puts us at a disadvantage when we want to explore current issues and off beat titles. You can help to provide my classroom access to 18 copies of this amazing book. It is a revised version of the award winning "Fast Food Nation" with a writing style and information tailored to middle school readers.
Your donation to this project will not only change the way my students think about the food they put into their bodies, it will also change the way they think about reading.
Exciting nonfiction titles for young adults are few and far between; this book is one of the good ones. Not only will you help to make my students live healthier lives, you'll inspire them to read books that encourage them to do so.Read More
