My Students

I teach in what is considered one of the most dangerous cities in America; Camden, New Jersey. Contrary to popular belief, the students I work with every day are genuinely good kids that are eager to learn and do their best each day. For some of my students, it is an uphill battle to get to school each day and requires a great deal of self motivation as education and the importance of education is not stressed at home. But each day, I have twenty 3rd graders that come ready to give me their best.

The drive my students have to succeed makes up for what the lack in support that they receive at home.

For the past four years, I have taught in an inclusion classroom and have worked with students of varying academic levels. Regardless of my students' abilities, my kids come ready to give their all and succeed. Success looks very different for each of my students, but success is success none the less. I have high expectations for my students and expect nothing but 100% effort every day. And they rise to the occasion, despite what people expect them to do.

My Project

4th grade is a year of growth, challenge and productive struggle! During the 4th grade year, the math material that the students are presented becomes much more difficult and requires that the students be able to recall multiplication facts QUICKLY! The problem is, that some students spend so much figuring out their facts that they forget what they should really be doing! Thus, leading to simple mistakes that could have been avoided if they just knew their facts to begin with!

We try to support our scholars as much as we can both in school and at home.

We understand the need for kids to learn their facts and the positive impact that constant repetition has on a student's ability to memorize pertinent information. The problem is, we lack the resources to help maximize student learning. A great way to help students commit facts to memory is through Minute Math Kits.

The materials we are wishing for are essential to get are Minute Math Kits up and running. The paper will allow us to make copies of the Minute Math pages so students can take them home and practice. Each of the worksheets goes into a sheet protector and the students can take home a dry erase marker to practice their facts multiple times. And finally, the pencil sharpener will allow us to sharpen those pencils in the classroom and take those Minute Math tests! We are currently without a sharpener because ours broke and we haven't been able to replace it!
