My students range from Pre-K through Third Grade. Each student who comes to my room has a disability of some sort and struggles to learn in the general education classroom. Many of my students come from low income households and have limited resources and experiences. Some students don't have a bed to call their own and could be classified as homeless or highly mobile. It is especially imperative to get my students excited about learning... giving them support, building relationships, providing safety and personal space are a few ways I can help these students succeed. Students experiencing homelessness may find regular school attendance difficult. Yet, school may be the only place where the student can experience interactions with students their own age, experience quiet, feel safe, and can feel success.
My Project
There are many things we need to do in order to ensure that homelessness students receive adequate educational opportunities. My project will create a space for students experiencing homelessness or are highly mobile to connect to school and their classroom. This connection will facilitate a sense of belonging which is important for student achievement. I need a comfy couch to help me create a space for those students who need to redirect their feelings, do their homework, display their class work, or nap. Often times homeless students do not sleep well and have no place to display their work from school. They often need a safe place to complete their homework or just a place to reconnect during the day. A couch will benefit my students creating opportunities for the above mentioned.
