My students are a group of energetic first graders who come to school each day eager to learn. They attend a high poverty, Title I school in rural Georgia. Over 85% of my children live in poverty. Our elementary school is a low income, rural school.
Regardless of our socioeconomic status, these students are young, ambitious, and smart.
Despite their hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn as much as they can so they can be successful. I teach an amazing group of first graders who come to school each day with smiles on their faces.
My Project
Young learners need healthy snacks to fuel their developing minds so that they can focus and learn. A nutritious snack is needed to help them be successful. The snacks will provide healthy energy to help these first graders remain engaged in various academic activities. These snacks will also be used to help model good eating habits when they begin to think of snacking.
When young minds are energized, they are able to participate and engage in various learning opportunities.
Another opportunity they will have to stay healthy is to have Clorox wipes and Lysol spray in the classroom. The children will be able to wipe their tables clean and spray the room to get rid of germs. Harsh, strong lights can cause eyestrain, headaches, and even anxiety for children. Reducing the flicker and glare from fluorescent lights with light covers is helpful in reducing, if not eliminating, those problems.
Next, they will be allowed to keep their brains healthy by reading books. The books will be placed into the classroom library where each child will be given time to pick a book to read. They will also have a chance to pick a seat cushion to sit on that can be cleaned each day.
Lastly, they will be given a chance to earn rewards for working hard that are healthy—not sugar based. In order for students to learn best, their basic needs must be met first, otherwise little to no learning will happen. Please join me in supporting my students to reach their full potential.
