Extreme Library Makeover! We're Bringing Reading Back!

My students need a few current, relevant, appealing titles to replace the hundreds of antiquated books recently weeded from the library.

My Students

We're bringing reading back! Help my divergent high school students rediscover the joy of reading, find needed resources, and share the fun with our daycare students. Our library of hundreds of outdated books has been weeded and is ready for an extreme makeover with a focus on quality.

My high school students are amazingly diverse, but everyone seems to fit in somewhere.

The school, located in Eastern North Carolina, serves slightly over 1000 students in grades 9 through 12 and includes a five-star daycare for children who are 3 and 4 years old. Approximately half of my students are economically disadvantaged. Staff members are very caring and supportive. As the media specialist, I have the privilege of seeing many students and teachers daily. The library is centrally located with lots of traffic during lunch and between classes. Preschoolers visit weekly to hear a story and check out a book. My wish is to revitalize the library and offer appealing and relevant books and resources for teens, preschoolers, and staff members to borrow.

My Project

The items requested will support recreational reading, as well as required reading for various subjects. "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" was requested by a math teacher. English II students need books available for assigned reading such as "Night" and "Freakonomics". Students often ask for test prep guides and popular fiction series which are included in my list. A Family and Consumer Science teacher requested "Daddy Daycare" to teach gender equity in a Parenting class. Award-winning titles including bilingual and multicultural books for preschool and high school students are listed as well. High schools students will enjoy reading to the preschoolers and I'm sure circulation will increase if the library provides titles that are needed and/or desired. New books will be displayed, and students will be invited to peruse.

The requested materials will help and empower many members of our school family.

Preschoolers will develop valuable reading skills while high school students will cultivate their reading skills and make real world connections. Online skimming and scanning serves a purpose, but we still need books to foster comprehension and imagination. Of course, I must add that reading for fun also improves test scores.
