Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The only way for young people to be prepared for the future is to learn about the past. This includes knowing, in depth, about the people involved in the historic events that shaped our country into what it is today.
I've been blessed to have the opportunity to work at the same Title I school for the past 11 years.
My students come from various countries. They bring with them their cultures, traditions, and languages. With it, also come the challenges. Many of my second language learners are still working hard to master the English language. About two-thirds are on free or reduced lunch. Needless to say, we have many obstacles to overcome.
My Project
My students need 32 biographies at different reading levels and 3 plastic magazine file racks. A big part of third grade social studies is learning about famous Americans. Since most of my students' families are from other countries, many of the "well-known" Americans are unfamiliar to them. For this reason, our yearly biographies are so important. This project will provide my students with the books they need to learn about famous Americans that have shaped our country. Not only will these books be used for research in their reports, but the books will also be made available throughout the year.
These books will benefit my students in several ways.
First, my students will be able to choose from many well-written biographies with a wide range of people. The books are written at different reading levels so all students will be able to find a book that's just right for them. The information they learn from these reports, both as presenters and audience members, will be so valuable for every individual in my class!
