It's an eye opener when only 20% of my students come into 3rd grade advanced or proficient. My classroom population is made up of 80% ELD students with a second language spoken at home and 20% English Only. They attend a Title I school with the lowest API scores in town. Most of them are on free or reduced price lunch. Needless to say, my students have many obstacles to overcome on a daily basis. Most students come in unmotivated and see reading as a chore rather than an adventure. When given silent reading time, some have difficulty focusing and spend time looking around the classroom. They don't know the meaning of "getting lost in a book." Because of their lack of personal experience, they are not able to make personal connections with the text and have a hard time visualizing the stories.
