I am a first and second grade math and science teacher at a charter school in Paterson, New Jersey. Our school was founded in 2011 in an urban area. Our school has made many great strides in the few years it has been open, despite many obstacles including a very tight budget.
Just as the world and expectations are continually changing, so are the needs of the students in my classroom.
In order to provide them with an engaging and meaningful education, I need to be able to offer a classroom environment that is rich with resources.
My Project
My little scientists come to school eager to learn new things. They are constantly making connections from what we learn in class to their own personal experiences. It can be difficult for us to further our research on topics when faced with limited resources. The internet can be difficult for young students to navigate and find age-appropriate readings. Scholastic News and Science Spin will provide weekly non-fiction texts for my students. The articles are relevant to what is going on in our world.
These age-appropriate research materials will help them make connections from our small classroom to the big world around them.
This funding will not only provide us with articles in print but also digital resources to enjoy. Please help me make a difference for our future scientists!
