Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth, seventh and eighth grade classroom is filled with students who have grown tired of daily struggles to learn. Middle School is already tough without the struggles of a learning disability and trying to fit in. It is my desire that their education becomes a foundation of positive experiences, positive choices and a passion to learn. You see, many of my students have become discouraged and have given up on learning. They have specific learning disabilities which challenge their success at school and I am eager to ignite a love to learn again.
Teaching Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade Special Education Students is a great opportunity for me to build a love of learning during an impressionable time in their lives.
I teach all core subjects and I want Current Events coupled with Science and Social Studies to become more accessible than it has been in the past. I am fortunate to be a part of a Title 1 school that has high standards for both staff and students. This lends itself to a campus with a positive growth mindset and an expectation of excellence for both the students and staff.
My Project
Scholastic News Magazine will make current events accessible and interesting for my mild/moderate students! Each issue includes read-aloud stories, activities for deeper understanding, and real world that help excite and motivate students. They include technology components, where students can easily and safely learn more about topics of interest through videos, additional articles, and games. Through these magazines, Current events become more accessible, through real life, relevant and rigorous materials and helping special education students feel more engaged.
Each monthly issue is jammed packed with high-interest, relevant non-fiction topics that extend learning with real-life current events.
Students are more likely to access and participate in learning when information is real, relevant, meaningful, and engaging. Scholastic News Magazines will do just that! Through the stories, students will gain necessary literacy skills, to assist them in becoming knowledgeable and more confident students. They will view current even topics and understand how they directly relate to the world around them.
