My Students

As a teacher in a low income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I want my students to know that they are valued and I want to provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences!

My scholars enjoy coming to school everyday and each day they are eager to learn something new!

They like to move, they love to read, and are eager to seek positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of the classroom, I am determined to focus on their potential and academic growth. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly help foster a nurturing environment and engaging learning experiences for them. By creating a love of learning I hope to inspire my scholars to continue on a path of academic excellence!

My Project

Scholastic News and Time for Kids magazines are a great way for students to stay up to date on important information in the world, while also supporting their progress in reading skills by providing an engaging opportunity to reinforce vocabulary and comprehension strategies. My students are diverse in ethnicity. Our district is providing the schools with the essentials to give our students the best education possible. However, because of budget cuts, it is difficult to provide extras such as magazines in order to stimulate students' interest in current events. The majority of the students were born here and have not traveled much or know much about the world around them.

At present, my students' world centers around themselves and their family and friends.

I would like them to realize what is happening around the world and if we could do anything to make the world a better place. I would love to have Scholastic News and Time for Kids magazines for my 5th grade classes. I want my students to know that there is a world outside of their little community. Most of my students think that current events would be "Who won the Little League baseball game?" or "Who got the highest score on a video game?" I will be using the magazines weekly to encourage the students to discuss and debate the articles and to enjoy reading about the many interesting places, events and people in their world. These magazines will also help with reading fluency and comprehension skills which we are always trying to improve!
