My third grade students come from varied backgrounds according to poverty level, ELL level, culture, race, health conditions, religion, etc.
As our school district has approached the philosophy of personalized learning, we have found that there is a need for choices in learning experiences for our students, depending on their needs and interests.
Students need opportunities to have both voice and choice in how they will be able to learn and work best.
Our students share a love of learning, genuine curiosity, and the desire to make personal choices about their learning!
They love it when there are several choices in learning topics and ways to show what they have learned, in addition to opportunities to work together and share what they are learning with others both in and out of the classroom.
My Project
Scholastic News and the Scholastic Map Skills materials provide high-interest, relevant texts for students that includes Common Core learning goals and lessons. There is also a technology component that gives students and teachers access to online activities and lesson plans. We need individual copies of both Scholastic News and Scholastic Map Skills to enhance our Social Studies, Geography, and Literacy curricula. These will be used in whole class, small group, and partner work. Students will use them as resources to teach others about their new learning.
Having access to the Scholastic News and Map Skills texts will help my students practice using their literacy skills in real-world type reading about social studies, science, and geography topics, as well as give them texts at their level to research and teach others!
These texts have historically been popular in my classroom and students make connections between subjects as they learn about new topics using these materials. Students are excited about what they learn and love to share their learning with classmates and make posters showing their learning for others to see in the hallways.
