Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach third grade in a very culturally and ethnically diverse classroom in South Carolina. Our school is a Title 1 school, serving many low-income families. My students are working hard this year to become fluent readers and begin reading on grade level. We are lucky to be surrounded by books. However, books are only half of the equation in building strong readers.

Research shows that students who can comprehend nonfiction text will perform better in all aspects of their academic career. That is where the problem arises. The nonfiction text that my students are surrounded by typically comes in the form of textbooks. These huge, and sometimes boring books are very daunting to a student who struggles with reading, or speaking English for that matter. They find little interest in the text and often do not feel confident enough to even attempt reading nonfiction.

Over the years, I have seen the power of smaller publications, such as the "Weekly Reader" and "Time for Kids". I have witnessed how these, smaller, more interesting, and easier to read magazines capture the students attention and help them become more confident in reading nonfiction text. The magazines are designed for students and are in a format that allows them to read and comprehend all of the information presented.

By donating to this project, my students will each receive a subscription to "Weekly Reader" that I can use in class to teach the elements of nonfiction text. Students will also be able to take these magazines home and share them with their families. Mere ownership of the subscription could encourage a lifetime love of reading. Who wouldn't want to feel responsible for igniting a students love of reading nonfiction text and prepare them for the reading they will face in the real world? I know that these subscriptions will truly make a difference in my students' lives!
