Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are sophisticated, energetic, media savvy and image conscious. As a New Media Academy Magnet, students in our program are constantly engaged in outward-facing media messages, as well as the subtle subtexts of communication that digital media fosters. At the same time, we continue to need to interface with print materials - scans, copies and printouts of text. It's essential for the effective sharing of our work.
Although the classroom must both embrace and compete with the power of digital media in order to engage our students, we need our classroom and students to maintain a connection to print models of text - for peer review, for the sharing of exemplars, and for developing scans of primary source material.
For this reason, it is imperative to me that we bring a 3-in-1 Printer into the classroom. Students need to be able to scan documents, print drafts, create flyers and other communication materials.
Access to a word processing document, such as a 3-in-1 printer will help students engage with print materials in an effective manner.
My Project
Peer review and exemplar modeling is critical to building a positive and rigorous classroom environment. Further, access to primary sources is essential to students' growth as inquiry-based learners.
Although we are in the digital age, students need to interact with print and paper-based materials.
Annotating a print text or a peer's essay draft is a tactile experience with growing writers and readers - it is still an important experience for students.
A sturdy 3-in-1 Printer will allow students to exhibit agency over their work, display and share their progress, and scan documents that otherwise are not available online or in quantities conducive to sharing.
