Books can take my students on so many different adventures. My students come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and have a wide range of ability levels. We are a Title 1 school with over 40% of our students receiving free or reduced lunches. Our ESOL students are on the rise, and because of this and other factors, I have a wide range of ability levels. In my class, I have students coming to me on a kindergarten reading level to students that can read and comprehend at a 5th grade level. It's no longer just teaching 2nd grade for me, so I am always searching for activities that cover a range of ability levels. My goal is to be able to have book clubs in my classroom. I want to have quality books for all ranges of readers in my classroom.
My Project
Being a second grade teacher is the BEST! But being in second means I have a wide variety of reading levels. I have students that read at a kindergarten level to students reading at a 6th+ grade level. I have a wonderful variety of books on CD, but I don't have CD players anymore for students to listen to them. I have had some in the past, but they didn't last longer than a year before I had to replace them.
My students reading at a lower level or my ESOL students, would benefit by listen to books that have a larger set of vocabulary in them to help grow their reading and knowledge.
Not only do I want to use the wonderful books on CD resource again in my class, I want to encourage reading in all forms and create a reading goal station in my classroom. That is why I have requested all of the paper along with the CD players.
I want to help my students create goals and make certificates when students achieve those goals. It is so important to them to realize they are working towards a self-generated goal and I want to be able to help encourage students to obtain them. Hopefully the use of creating and achieving goals will set a path of continued goal setting and growth.
