This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year I have the pleasure of teaching a great group of first grade students. They come to school eager to learn more about the world around them and ask several questions about what's going on in our world.
These kiddos will come in the door ready to learn and have fun, despite their difficulties at home.
As a teacher in a Title I school, many of my students come from poverty stricken, low-income homes. Some also are learning English as a second language and others have special needs. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Some of my students live in a shelter or motels or are living with other families.
They will laugh, cry, hug, giggle, play, and learn all in one place: their classroom. Therefore, I am eager and ready to help them achieve their dreams.
My Project
Accidents and messes happen. Students are still learning to tell when they need to use the bathroom and they get into messes with mud and paint and markers and spaghetti sauce at lunch! Since I work with low-income students, they do not often have extra clothes to send to school in case of accidents or messy clothes. When they have an accident, they need a new pair of pants and underwear. If they spill something, they will need new pants. If I change clothes for a student and send them home with my spare clothes, they often do not come back.
Being able to have clean clothes is important to my students’ self-esteem and confidence.
Students are easily embarrassed and can become self conscious when an accident or mess occurs. Going up to the office to wait for a parent to come bring them clothes both hurts their self image and keeps them out of the classroom and they'll miss important lessons. Please help give my students confidence and keep them in the classroom to further their education.
