Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach around 160 eighth-graders at a Title I school on the eastern side of San Antonio, Texas, where the majority of our students come from low-income families. We have a very diverse group of students who are eager to learn. One hundred percent of our students also qualify for a free lunch. Many cannot afford even basic supplies, so we try to provide everything we are able to for the students that are needed, along with extra goodies as rewards. I teach a majority of Hispanic and African American students, a large percentage of English language learners, and special education students.
All our students are bright, capable young people who can achieve everything they set out to do.
Our school strives to help them with all their goals. The teachers at my school work together to give our students the best educational opportunities possible. Our school is known as the "Pride of the East Side" and they are the Mighty Cougars.
My Project
I have been trying to grow my class library for my students this year by looking for books and stories that I think my students will find the most interesting. As an avid reader myself, I absolutely love being able to share my love for reading with my students. One project at a time, I am hoping to add these fantasy and young adult stories to share brand new worlds with all my students who wish to take a break from the real world and discover their passion for reading.
I would love to be able to give my students the gift of Young Adult books that they would enjoy reading for fun!
I want to show them other worlds that exist when you open up a fantasy book. Some of these are books I personally own and have read. I would love for my students to be able to experience them too! Some of these are duplicate copies because they are popular and unfortunately, my students cannot share and read books at the same time. I am having to quarantine some of the books after they have been read to be safe.
