My Students

I work as a clinical school social worker in an urban elementary school with more than 75% of students who come from low-income households. Our students have experienced a number of traumas as it relates to the pandemic, homelessness, grief and loss and violence.

My goal is provide students with art supplies that will help them creatively express themselves as it pertains to their mental health wellness.

It is important that the whole child is focused on as we include academic and social skills.

Incorporating art into mental health check-ins and breaks support and help to reduce anxiety and frustration. These activities can also serve as a learning tool. Studies show that people with strong social emotional skills and overall well-being are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, socially and physically.

My Project

Art is critical for our youth and supports social emotional learning and growth. Creating art enhances communication and empathy in the storyteller, which is usually the student. The materials will make a difference in learning by allowing students to express themselves through art. It also gives them an opportunity to have fun while learning.

Art focuses on engaging in self-discovery, goal setting, and working alongside others.

It will teach the students self awareness, understanding others, and making responsible decisions. Students can be helped to understand their feelings through pictures, drawing, journaling and arts and crafts.
