Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students come to class after riding a bus for over 1-2 hours so they are tired or stressed out due to the noise created on the bus ride. They also have multiple disabilities and many are non-verbal. My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. They also come with many health issues. My students range in age from 18-22 years old. Most of my students are non-verbal so providing hands-on tools are extremely helpful to help with communication and the learning experience. We are a program that works on life skills and helps them to learn how to fit into a world that can seem very daunting to them.

The typical student in my class reads at a pre-k level and many struggles with basic phonics and number sense or even writing their own name.

Ninety percent of our students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Our department budget is not disclosed to us and is very limited to what we can get. I tend to purchase most items myself.

My Project

The products that I have chosen are to help my students express themselves creatively using their hands and mind. My students need materials that help them utilize their hands and minds. The materials I have chosen will be utilized throughout the year in a variety of ways. The paper would help students work on their colors along with creating pictures to express their feeling. The butcher paper would be used to help decorate the classroom and help to make the room feel more inclusive for all students. All materials would benefit the entire class.
