My Project

My students live in a vibrant section of Philadelphia. They have social, emotional, and financial burdens at home. Many of my students have experienced trauma personally in their home lives. My students hale from all over the world. Some have spent time in refugee camps, or survived natural disasters. This project will allow my students to express themselves through art. Art therapy uses drawing, sculpting, journaling and other art-based practices as a way to help students express emotions, problem solve, manage anxiety and stress in a creative way.

Art has always been important, but art therapy for students may be more critical now than ever.

Research has shown a solid connection between children’s mental health and the COVID 19 pandemic. Fortunately, improving students’ mental health through art therapy has emerged as a viable intervention.

Many of my students are non-native English speakers and coloring or sculpting will allow them to communicate in a non-verbal way. For others, journaling is extremely therapeutic where students enjoy writing poems and feelings at home, that we can process during individual sessions. Your donation will go a long way in helping students from ages 9-14 process difficult emotions and express themselves (through art).
