My students need Rigid Wrap plaster, 15 journals, and 15 t-shirts to create works of art about themselves, and learn more about who they are in the process. Each student will be given a sketch journal and they will be exploring basic materials - collage, painting, making masks (using the Rigid Wrap) and printing their personal logos on the t-shirts.
My middle school students are highly diverse, economically and culturally. We have an extensive English as a Second Language program, with students from Somalia, Sudan, Cambodia, and Iraq.
As a guidance counselor, I see students that are not successful because they have not been able to surmount emotional obstacles that prevent them from using their personal resources.
I want to offer an after-school art experience for at-risk students. By making art about themselves, students will find their strengths, and their voice. It will help them to know that they create themselves, they create their life--and to take control of that creative process. With the materials on my list, students will make plaster masks, create a personal logo and print it on tee shirts, and record their visual and written reflections in their sketch journals to share with other members of the group.
Your help will make it possible for students to feel competent, where they have only been experiencing failure, to see that they have the creative force within them to shape their lives in the direction they envision.
