Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of my students come to school carrying more than just backpacks — they carry the weight of navigating trauma, language barriers, and a world that hasn’t always recognized their brilliance. As English learners, struggling readers, or young people managing complex realities, traditional approaches to reading and writing often leave them feeling shut out. But I don’t believe in giving up on them — because they haven’t given up on themselves.

In our classroom, we say, “You can do it because you are a leader and a scholar.” And I mean it.

That’s why I am requesting art and writing supplies — not just materials, but tools for expression, empowerment, and engagement. When a student struggles to express their thinking through words, I offer them another way: through paint, clay, drawing, or collage. Art becomes a language they can speak, a bridge to reading comprehension and emotional safety.

With your support, I can fill our room with the materials they need to respond to literature and life in meaningful, creative ways. This project will help me create a space where my students feel seen, heard, and powerful — a space where learning feels possible and joyful again.
