Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a national AVID demonstration school, which means that our students are all AVID students. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
One important organizational tool for AVID is the interactive notebook.
It allows our students to take ownership of their own learning and gives them a way to prepare for advanced coursework in college by learning the process of Cornell note taking. Interactive notebooks are used in all classes including my math class!
Our students are historically underserved and unrepresented in 4-year universities, but are determined and very hard working! If given the academic support that they need, they are going to succeed in college and in a global society.
My Project
Through a grant last school year we received WONDERFUL dry-erase tables and desks for our classroom use, but we keep running out of markers to use! Our students love getting to solve math problems on their desks (without getting in trouble) instead of using pencil and paper. The students bring what markers they can, but we don't have enough for everyone to use and learn. A fresh supply of markers will also help us utilize our dry-erase clipboards for mobile learning / flexible seating. Supplying markers for the rest of the school year sounds small but will make a HUGE difference to our learners!
