Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students work independently and at different rates. The science center allows them to explore when they are done with their work, since we have two different grade levels at the same time. Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. Students need to learn to be independent

Our school is a wonderful little school nestled in a low economic neighborhood.

Most of our students are immigrants and parents don't speak the language. Almost all of the students in our school are on free or reduce lunch, therefore parents can not provide them with the latest electronics and supplies they may need. The students in the gifted classes are very self direct and eager students. They are usually the only person in their home who speak English. They become the translators for their parents and they are usually on their own when it comes to homework. In many occasions, they themselves become teachers to their parents. I have 34 students in my primary class. I teach them reading, social studies, writing, language arts and science. This class is a combination of first and second grade students. I feel they would benefit from having a science center that allows them to explore and learn, using technology as well as scientific tools.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad to use in the science center. I would like to set up a center that is readily available for the students to both explore and learn at their own pace. Since I teach two grade levels at the same time students have to be independent. Many of them are fast workers and complete the assignments quickly. Having a science center with kits they can use on their own would facilitate their love for learning. The iPad would allow the students to explore and research what we are learning in class, and then follow it up by using the science kits to have hands on activities. The journals would be used to record their work. They magazines would be used as a resource. The butterfly kit would be used as an ongoing lesson, and the goggles can be used when working with the kits.Gifted children are very curious and demand knowledge. They enjoy exploring things that they see and are not satisfied with simple answers. As a teacher your goal is to create this environment.

As the teacher of gifted students you see the eagerness the children have for learning.

These children think years above their grade level , they can analyze and understand concepts that are sometimes even difficult for adults. I feel that the donations to my project will foster that curiosity and love for learning. Students remember what they experienced in school more that just listening, I feel this would provide my students with a better understanding for science and life itself.
