Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a linguistically and culturally diverse group of 3rd graders. The school that my students attend is a Title I school, meaning that the majority of the students receive free or reduced price lunches. In my class specifically, 86% of my students are eligible for free lunch. The majority of my students are also English Language Learners and are learning English as their second language.
My students love learning and expressing their knowledge in creative ways.
Every single day I am so excited to come to work and spend time with my students watching them learn and grow. I never know what unique and interesting things will come out of their mouths and I am constantly surprised at how much they know.
On top of all of their bright ideas my students really have compassionate and caring hearts. Some of my students are going through incredibly difficult things in their personal lives but you would hardly know it based on how they show up ready to learn each day. With the right support I have no doubt these students are going to big places in their future.
My Project
The students in my class love to read and this year I have been doing my best to expand my small classroom library to feed the curiosities of my blooming readers. I have come to find out that my students are incredibly motivated to get their hands on non-fiction books especially books that are biographical in nature. My library currently has very few non-fiction books in it so I am making this project to hopefully get more non-fiction texts into the hands of my students.
I am hoping that by putting a more diverse range of non-fiction books into my classroom library that I will not only feed my students' curiosity but that I can also expand their knowledge of history and the world around them.
Having these books in my room would also be helpful for preparing my students for skills they will need in the future. Most of the text students encounter in the classroom in k-12 classrooms and even in college are non-fiction texts. Exposing my students to more non-fiction texts will sharpen their skills for comprehending and analyzing the information found in non-fiction texts in their academics.
