Exploring the World through National Geographic Magazine
My students need 25 copies of National Geographic Pathfinder Edition Grades 4-6, 5 copies of Grades 2-3 Edition, and 5 copies of Extreme Explorer Edition.
Remember how excited you were when you checked the mail & your favorite magazine had arrived? My students deserve this same experience. My current students are thrilled to see our National Geographic Explorer Magazines arrive each month! Can you help me create this same excitement next year?
I will have another great, inquisitive group of 5th graders in NC next year.
Our school has a large population of English Speakers of Other Languages. We also have a high percentage of at risk students; approximately 85% or more of our students are on free or reduced lunch.
My Project
The students are able to read, but still struggle with vocabulary & comprehension in the content areas such as Science & Social Studies.
National Geographic Explorer monthly magazines are high interest writing that is at an appropriate level for each grade. The vocabulary will challenge the students to learn & use new words. The magazines would be used in our small group guided reading, as well as being read during their independent reading time. I also hope that students will become interested in finding other resources to help them continue their learning.
I would be able to use the different levels of the editions to meet the needs of my students. I will have some students who are still struggling and they could use the lower edition without anyone realizing their magazine was any different because it includes the same stories just written at a lower level. I would use the Extreme Explorer magazines with my advanced readers.
With your help every child in my class will have their own personal high interest magazine that will increase their vocabulary and reading comprehension.
This will help improve our EOG scores and inspire students to be lifelong learners and lifelong readers!
