Save our future citizens! My students are lacking resources related to the history of our great nation. Rather than teaching solely from a textbook, I would love to have resources that would provide my students with hands-on activities related to some important developments in American History.
I am a fifth grade Language Arts/Social Studies teacher at a low-income, Title One school in North Carolina.
We have a large percentage of students receiving free/reduced lunch. Many of my students lack the necessary resources to come to school and be prepared. My ultimate goal is to overcome these obstacles and ensure my students have successful academic careers.
My Project
Rather than sitting and just reading about the history of our nation, having different types of texts, and hands-on activities about the topic would ensure that my students retain the information learned about the development of our country. Engagement is one of the most important factors in student achievement. By providing my students with new texts, and games that they can work with about the Explorers, the American Revolution, and Westward Expansion would help create a solid foundation of knowledge needed to become a well-informed citizen.
Having these materials would allow me to show my students exactly how fascinating and exciting the history of our nation is.
From the explorers from Europe to the Gold Rush and immigration with the Westward Expansion, our country has evolved and adapted to lifestyles of the citizens. In order to develop helpful, educated members of society, it is crucial that students learn and retain this important information about their home.
