Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade ELL Collaborative in an inner city Title l school. I have 26 students in my classroom. My school services children that live in a poor area of the city. In a school of approximately 650 students, 95% of them receive free breakfast and lunch.
My amazing students are ready, able, and eager to learn about the United States!
They have many needs so I try to make our classroom a safe, comfortable environment where they can feel welcome and loved. My ELL students are eager to learn while my general education students are always willing to assist their classmates' learning. My students need every tool and strategy I can come up with to assist them in learning English. It is very important for all of them to feel successful! Despite the challenges they face, they are always ready to help each other succeed.
My ELL students are hungry for knowledge about their new country. Learning a new culture can be difficult so the social studies I provide is both essential and beneficial.
My Project
The United States Resource box will engage my students in how our government works. Not only will the students learn about the three branches of government but also different American symbols. The Geography Skills match ups are a hands-on way for my students to learn about maps and land-forms.
After learning about our government, the students can hold an election in the classroom complete with speeches, signs, and a voting booth.
Having a globe will enable the children to see where their home country is compared to where they are in the United States. Lastly, my students will learn about important figures from our country's history.
