Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I like to think of myself as one of those fun physics and geoscience (earth/space science) teachers! I love to have my high school students remember their carefree childhood days of running through the field with a kite, playing frisbee with family on a beach, and badminton at a backyard barbeque. It brings a smile to their faces when they start realizing they were "learning" all along: from simple forms of motion, to air pressure, to projectile motion, to lift, to applying Newton's Laws.
Not only do they get to be outdoors, and off of their cell phones, but moreover I am able to show them how these great toys from their childhood are actually very educational!
Being cooped up in a classroom, staring at a computer, and using the standard science supplies can get a bit dry, at least from my perspective. I'm always at my local thrift stores trying to grab miscellaneous toys that are both fun and educational, but my resources are limited. Plus, as you know teens can be a little rough with lawn games and outside activities so I'm trying to replace some of my last field day's worth of supplies and build up some new ones. I'm hoping someone who likes to reminisce about the good old days of being free in the sunshine with the wind flowing through their hair will donate to inspire my physics and geoscience students!
