Exploring the Lost Art of Sewing

Help me give my students the opportunity to find the lost art of sewing using a sewing machine.

My Students

The students in my class come from a small community in Hawaii. They come from diverse backgrounds with mixed ethnicities. Our school prioritizes having a growth mindset and being bucket fillers. They believe in creating well-rounded individuals that are caring with problem-solving skills. My students are very bright, innovative, and creative. I believe in teaching well-rounded students attending to their academic, SEL (Social, Emotional, Learning), and creative needs.

I'm always looking for opportunities to stretch and extend their learning in innovative and creative ways.

My students want so much to be successful and I want to give them the tools to meet their goals.

My Project

The materials and items I am requesting will help to build the whole-child by exploring the lost art of sewing. With this pandemic those that have the knowledge of sewing were incredibly useful in making face masks for themselves, family members, and first responders. Unfortunately, sewing has become a lost art, and I want to teach it to the new generation of children. The simple sewing machines I requested are kid-friendly, and the fabric, thread, seam ripper, measuring tape, sewing scissors, and sewing clips will help the students how to use these sewing supplies in various projects. The students first project will be to make face masks for themselves. Then, we can move on to other projects such as face masks for their family members or even helping to make for other students in the school. I learned sewing when I was about their age and have found it to be a life-long real-world skill that keeps on giving. I was incredibly proud to be able to make masks for my family and front-line workers. I want to give the students the same opportunity in this world where sewing is becoming a lost art. With your contributions, you can help me to give these students a life-long gift that will keep on giving and focus on the whole-child.
