I had shared how some generous donors had funded this project and described it to them. Students were very excited to learn to create their own leis to give to others. Lei giving is such an important part of the Hawaiian culture to indicate gratitude or love for others. This will be a life-long skill that will help them for various occasions such as graduations, birthdays, or other celebrations. So, when the materials arrived, the whole class was very happy to begin this project. \r\n\r\nThe students received their supplies and began their first lessons on the ribbon lei making. This is the first level of ribbon lei making, which is a weaving style. Some students picked it up very fast, while others need more time. At this point, there are a little more than half the class that are done, while less than half are still working on completing their first lei project. I took pictures of the students who have completed their first lei. \r\n\r\nThe next steps for this project are to have the students work on a higher level of complexity of lei, which will integrate the ribbon cutter, the fishing string, needles, and more ribbon. I'm going to start the lessons for the students who are complete so they can work on their next level of projects. Students will also work on creating more woven-style leis to donate to the school to give to visitors who come to the school. They will also be able to keep one of the leis they make to give to a person of their choice to show the \"Aloha\" spirit.
