I had shared with them that generous donors had helped make this project possible, and they were eager to see how they could use the new materials to learn, create, and express themselves. Having access to replenishing classroom supplies, SEL lesson materials, and creative craft supplies has already provided my students with meaningful opportunities to learn and grow.\r\n\r\nOne of our first activities was an SEL lesson using the book What If Everybody Did That? After reading the story, students completed a graphic organizer exploring what might happen if everyone chose to engage in behaviors such as littering, talking during instruction, or not following classroom expectations. This activity sparked thoughtful conversations about how our individual choices affect our classroom community and reinforced the importance of accountability, responsibility, and making positive choices.\r\n\r\nWe have also begun using the craft supplies to encourage creativity and self-expression. Students combined flower beads from another classroom project with the friendship beads from this project to create personalized keychains. It was wonderful to see the different ways students incorporated the materials. Some used the beads to add colorful accents, while others selected colors, letters, and designs that represented their interests and personalities. Each student created something unique that they could feel proud of.\r\n\r\nThe friendship bead kits will also be used for a special friendship bracelet project with our second-grade buddy class. Students will have the opportunity to create bracelets for themselves and their younger buddies, giving them a meaningful way to build connections, practice kindness, and strengthen relationships across grade levels. This activity will allow students to put our SEL lessons into action by demonstrating friendship, inclusion, generosity, and caring for others.\r\n\r\nOur project is continuing! One of our next activities will be using the sticker maker to transform students' ideas into something they can carry with them throughout the school year. Students will create stickers featuring motivational messages from our SEL lessons, personalized icons, and positive reminders to encourage themselves and others. They quickly discovered that jewelry making required more precision than they had expected. Learning to use pliers, chains, findings, and other jewelry-making tools challenged them to slow down, problem-solve, and carefully follow each step.\r\n\r\nCreating jewelry inspired by Hawaiʻi gave students a meaningful way to express cultural pride while learning to appreciate the traditions, flowers, and natural resources that make our islands special. They were proud to see their ideas transformed into finished pieces and enjoyed having the choice to keep their creations or give them as handmade gifts to family members and loved ones.\r\n\r\nThis project also sparked interest in continuing to develop their jewelry-making skills. As a next step, students will have opportunities to create additional earrings and other jewelry pieces for themselves or as gifts for Christmas, birthdays, and other special occasions. So, when the materials arrived, they were very happy to begin this project. \r\n\r\nThis project allowed my students to create earrings from shells while connecting their creativity to the rich cultural traditions of Hawaiʻi. As students design and make their own pieces, they will develop patience, creativity, fine-motor skills, and pride in learning a hands-on cultural craft. Students were very excited to learn a new skill. They hadn't realized how difficult it was to work with the new materials, such as the pliers, chains, and various other jewelry supplies to create earrings. \r\n\r\nCreating something inspired by Hawaiʻi allowed the students to express cultural pride while learning to appreciate the traditions and natural resources that make our islands special. Students will take handmade piece they can be proud of and a deeper appreciation for the culture and heritage of Hawaiʻi. They will either keep the projects for themselves or gift them to their loved ones as presents. \r\n\r\nThe next steps for this project are to have the students create more earrings and other jewelry pieces for themselves or their loved ones such as presents for Christmas or other special occasions.
