Exploring the Future through Biotechnology

My students need access to modern biotechnology equipment. Currently they are limited to learning theory without exposure to the practical side of biotechnology.

My Students

Science can and should be exciting and relevant. Biotechnology is a core component of nearly all scientific study today. Students entering college must have an up-to-date understanding of the principles behind modern molecular biology and be able to function successfully in a college laboratory.

My students are enthusiastic young men and women who are excited about learning and anxious to understand the theory behind their science education.

Our small rural charter school lacks the funding to provide the wide range of resources necessary for a more hands-on examination of the scientific world. This should not put our students at a disadvantage, they should have access to the same level of education and experiences as students at larger, better funded schools. The vast majority of our students go on to college and in order to be prepared for study at the college level, they should have a good basic understanding of modern scientific practices.

My Project

We need good quality scientific equipment for developing a good understanding of the theory behind molecular biology. Much of what our students study about microbiology is limited to theoretical information. Students need to be able to experience what it means to run a gel or how to use DNA to learn about taxonomy, forensic science and evolution. This can only be accomplished with biotechnology equipment that is of a quality and type that allows students to complete the same procedures used by professional scientists. With your support, my students will find a new outlook on science. The only way to make science education meaningful and relevant is to provide students with real experiences. Experiences that will allow them to be better prepared for college, better informed citizens and more likely to pursue science as an occupation.

Colleges understand the importance of good basic training in science.

Students entering college are at a severe disadvantage if they have not had the opportunity to experience and learn about a wide range of scientific concepts including the importance of biotechnology and its role in scientific study. My students will be better prepared for college if they are have direct experience with the techniques used in modern laboratories. My students will benefit from this equipment for many years.
