My Students

Students often do not see themselves as "scientists" or doing science. They are not familiar with the personal stories of people who are now famous for their discoveries in science.

My students are very motivated academically.

Our small public school is in a busy section of the city. Some students travel over an hour by city bus or subway to attend. The school has a reputation of high achievement. Incoming students have major gaps in writing and reading skills. Teachers need to be innovative in their approach to fill these gaps while also teaching the science.

My Project

This project will enable students to analyze the life and work of an extraordinary yet non-traditional scientist. What makes this project exciting is that students will each own a book about their scientist. (Many of my students have never owned a science or math book.) Having access to grade level reading material will enable students to improve their reading and critical thinking skills. I will be able to discuss with students how people from humble beginnings overcome major obstacles to make a global impact.

What does it mean to be a "scientist"?

This project will allow students to critically examine this question using a historical figure. I see this project as drawing a link for students between themselves and the scientists they read about. This link will enable students to see themselves as scientists who have the potential to impact their world.
