Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade enrichment teacher at P.S. 345 in East New York, Brooklyn. At our school, enrichment doesn't mean learning at a much higher level than your peers; at our inner-city school, enrichment means "at or about at grade level". My students want to excel at the highest level they could possibly reach, but to their disadvantage, our school cannot provide us with materials to bring us to the next level. Through experience, I have noticed that much of the fifth grade New York State Social Studies test is focused on the settlement of our country. This includes the Native American and the settlers who started the great nation we live in. Many of the complaints by the teachers is that the students are not prepared enough. They feel that fitting a year and a half of curriculum into 3 months is very trying on everyone. In order to avoid this, I want to take my students to the next level by introducing them to the Native Americans. The American Indian Nation Book Series is just the way to begin. In this series, students will not only learn about the different tribes, but also find similarities and differences among the cultures. These books will allow students to see the impact Native Americans had on our land. With your help, we can make sure that these underprivileged students have the opportunity to succeed and enhance their self-esteem in the next grade.
