My Students

My students are bright, motivated, passionate, artistic and mature. Being enrolled in a music, art and performing arts high school, students are required to attend academic subject classes, in addition to their art classes. All students are enrolled in a studio in which a block of time is devoted to their particular art form. These blocked periods typically consist of anywhere between four to six periods.

Additionally, many students stay after school hours to continue their practices and rehearsals.

There is a balanced mixture of visual artists, dancers, singers, instrumental majors, drama majors, and musical theater. In English class in particular, students thrive because they are able to use their innate creativity and passion in a discipline that in many ways parallels their art.

My Project

We are requesting multiple copies of The White Teeth by Zadie Smith. Because White Teeth is multifaceted and nonlinear, it can be difficult for some students to follow along with the story. Therefore, students will be able to make thoughtful annotations in their own copies of the novel. This will help them with comprehension, close reading and analysis.

My diverse group of students will enjoy reading a novel written by a contemporary biracial, female British author.

Many topics raised in White Teeth are relevant and interesting to students living in NYC. They will be able to explore the London melting pot that Smith writes about in her witty and intellectual novel and draw parallels to the NYC they know. Topics explored in this novel are immigration, Brexit, identity and fate.
