Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a school in the Portland, Oregon area. Our school building is 2 years old and fantastic for our beautiful students! Our school community is very mobile. We have a 50% new student rate each year. Our families speak 26 different languages at home.
My Kindergartners are an amazing group of children.
Only about 3 come to school with any previous experience in a classroom. Most of them speak very little English. They are so excited to be in school. You can see it in their eyes when they walk into my classroom full of engaging, age appropriate activities and toys. They know there is something magical happening in my classroom.
My Project
Kinders love read alouds! They especially love books that they can make a connection with. There are so many books about big feelings like self awareness, anxiety, sadness, making mistakes, mindfulness, kindness, and a whole lot more.
Five year olds don't have a lot of experience understanding their feelings about themselves, their classmates, the world around them.
They can explore their feelings about their world in a safe way by reading books about other childrens' experiences. After we read a book aloud we spend time making connections to our lives and what it means to use the skills the books have taught us at home and at school.
