My Project

The book I am requesting, Saints of the Household, by Ari Tison, will be used in a unit focusing on culture and identity. This unit is part of a class that uses literature to explore the theme of culture. Students will explore counternarratives and the connection between cultures and identity. By studying how characters' identities are connected to their culture, students will begin to think about how their own identity intersects with their culture.

The book I am requesting will serve as a foundation to spur students' curiosity about their own family culture.

After they finish reading and writing about Saints of the Household, they will begin researching the cultural background of their families. They will complete a project that tells the story of their family's cultural background.

Attending a concurrent enrollment high school, many of my students will attend college courses and complete an Associate's degree by the time they graduate. My students are bright, enthusiastic, and gifted. Through this project, I hope to show them the beauty of diversity and the importance of knowing where they come from.
