My students need sets of library books for buddy reading. High-interest nonfiction, such as National Geographic and Step Into Reading, will allow students to notice nonfiction features from classroom lessons in their independent reading time.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students make up a second-grade literacy class in a small community downtown school. One third of my students come from a home where a second language is spoken, so we work daily to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, and vocabulary through motivational activities with literature and realia.

My students are motivated to set goals and to maintain a positive growth mindset while taking steps toward reaching their goals every day.

Some of my second graders come from single parent households or families that face financial struggle, but they arrive prepared to learn and inquisitive about our lessons.

My Project

When second graders learn to silent read or buddy read, they learn to select a book that is appropriate for their ability - not too easy, and not too hard. Easy chapter books provide a natural reading progression when students are ready to move away from picture, rhyme, and repetition in literature.

Most students in my class have nice reading fluency, and they are ready to explore easy chapter books with more independence.

Students are extremely excited to buddy read, so they need multiple copies of high interest book series, such as Magic Tree House and Reading A-Z.

I can use donated books to allow individuals in my class to follow along as I read aloud to the class. I will also provide simple response to literature tasks, such as noticing author's purpose or text features, for students who are ready to buddy read from these books.
