My Students

The fifty-two students in my sixth-grade Humanities classes represent a variety of learning needs, styles, and strengths. Our school is a large suburban school ten miles north of Indianapolis. It is comprised of fifth through eighth grades.

Sixth-grade Humanities is a three-period block of time, in which students explore reading, writing, and social studies.

We approach the study of Humanities in a interconnected thematic exploration using project-based learning, student direction, and collaboration.

My students are encouraged to explore the connections between the stories of history and literature, and how the themes of conflict, courage, and change impact the progress of the human race and of themselves.

Students use a variety of media, including music, art, and technology, to learn about and express their understanding of their learning objectives. Our goal is not to produce mere consumers of knowledge, but rather as producers and contributors to the world around them.

My Project

SIxth-grade students dive into nearly 3,000 years of history of civilizations and cultures from all over the world. It's difficult to picture what these places look like for the students who have never traveled there.

VR technology allows students to travel all over the world from the comforts of their classroom in central Indiana.

Students are able to explore and examine the places they have previously only read about in their textbooks.

Virtual field trips - made possible by Google Cardboard headsets- provide a gateway to the rest of the world. These Google headsets will allow students to explore the Palace of Versailles and the lavish life of Marie Antoinette and to explore the trenches of the Western Front to see how soldiers survived in WWI.

The headsets will allow students to explore the countryside of England and Scotland to determine if the setting of their historical fiction is accurate. The headsets will allow students to travel to places they have never visited to examine how people's lives affect their points of view and how geography influences culture and history.

Students will use these headsets to explore cultures, civilizations, and landmarks they have only read about. The opportunities to enrich the study of history, reading, and writing are limitless!
