This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Spanish Level III to 9th-12th grade general education and 10th grade Pre-International Baccalaureate students. My students all have different skill sets when it comes to learning language, and they learn in a variety of different ways. All of them are eager to learn, especially when they can make a connection between their own lives and the material we read or watch in videos.
These students teach me new things every day, and I am always surprised by the life experiences some of them have shared.
With everything that they go through in their daily lives, they continue to have a hunger for more knowledge and are excited about reading, speaking, listening and writing in another language.
My Project
Reading is such an important skill to master when it comes to studying Spanish. Unfortunately, reading comprehension is one area where many of my students struggle. I have concluded that this is due to being forced to read a passage that accompanies a textbook and is not very interesting to the students. I have been printing reading selections from online sources that are more engaging, but this also becomes difficult due to the limited number of copies teachers are allotted each month.
A classroom library would be such a great solution to this problem.
Students will be able to choose from a variety of books that range in skill level to independently explore the Spanish language in a comfortable area of the classroom. In addition, students will be able to make connections to the grammar skills and vocabulary through reading the books in the classroom library. The books, bookshelf, bean bag chairs and the rug that I have selected will be an inviting area that will get the students excited about reading in Spanish.
