My students are active, engaged, hands on learners. They come to class each day ready to interact with others and learn about the world around them. They come from a small, rural community where many households struggle financially. Over half of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students also receive weekend food through our "Backpack Program".
Despite many emotional and economic struggles, my students love school, are eager to learn, and are proud of their community!
As their teacher, I want to inspire them to be their best and help them to grow up to be an important part of that community.
My Project
The building materials and manipulatives will be used with STEM prompts and design cards to guide students to solve real life problems without stifling their creativity! The Picasso Tiles might be in the tub used to build a shelter for the counting bears that can survive "a quick change to the earth" like an earthquake or a tsunami. The TinkerToys may be used to create a safe way for a slinky to move from one area to another. The Link 'n Learn links, Cuisinaire rods and Mathlink cubes will be used to solve math problems that connect with the engineering and design prompts such as figuring out the area and perimeter of their design.
The donations to this project with help my students become better collaborators, thinkers and problem solvers!
These materials will allow my students to practice clear communication and problem solving skills while using higher order thinking. Students will become familiar with these materials, allowing them to be feel safe and confident while in the classroom learning and exploring! They will also practice sharing and communicating respectfully with each other when using these materials. The tubs will be used throughout the day from morning work time to science and math class, and even during those rainy or below freezing indoor recess times!
