Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school I work in is a specialized district complex that serves students with special education needs coupled with high behaviors. Most of our students have Autism, although we do have a few that have other disabilities. Our student population is small due to the nature of our work. We are constantly working on building and developing important life skills for our students.
Our students have the ability to show their true skills and abilities with the proper supports and encouragement in place.
Our main approach with our students is to teach important life skills, while still exposing them to appropriate level academics. To do this, we rely on some technology but mainly manipulatives and books that our students can easily work with using their fine motor skills. This also requires us to get very creative and spend a lot of time prepping materials for our students.
Each of our students has amazing possibilities in front of them. My goal is to provide each student every opportunity I can so that they can live a fulfilling life as independently as possible.
My Project
During the school day, my students experience multiple outside triggers. This can include loud noises, changes to their schedule, and other environmental factors out of our control. When things get to be too much, my students are likely to have a sensory overload and this can trigger shut downs and/or extreme behaviors. When changes occur, we rely on multiple tools and toys to help our students manage their anxiety.
Sensory tools/toys have proven to be effective in helping children with autism to cope with changes that they cannot control.
To help with managing behaviors, I want to give my students options that can help calm them down. Fidget toys are great during transitions from one location to another. When my students just need a break, having water beads for them to play with or having bubbles in a safe area allows students to have a stress-free break to calm down. Along with the sensory toys and toys, I am asking for storage containers to place these objects in and to keep them organized for easy use throughout the day.
With this project, I hope to offer not only my students in my class, but all students in the school tools that can help the manage their emotions and the anxiety that comes with unexpected events. A calm and relax student is one that can focus and learn.
